RO purifiers are the best way to purify the water and make it drinkable. But one drawback is that they waste a lot of water. Therefore we have come with a list of the easy ways to use waste water from RO purifier.
There are several ways to reuse the RO water, which we will be mentioning here. But before that, let us talk about the reason behind the massive water wastage.
Reason for the water wastage.
When we purify the water in an RO purifier, we get one liter of water by wasting three liters. That means we waste 75% of water to filter 25%.
This is a considerable amount. The wastage of the water depends much on the TDS level.
High TDS level causes more water wastage, as the impurities are segregated via water.
The Reverse Osmosis process uses a membrane to trap the impurities with a molecular weight of more than 20.
As water has a molecular weight of 18, It quickly passes through the semipermeable membrane, but the other molecules cannot pass and emit with water as a wastage.
But we cannot waste so much water and can not even stop using the RO.
Therefore, the solution is to reserve them and utilize them for other purposes.
How to reserve the water?
The easiest way to reserve the water is to put a big jar under the wastewater omitting pipe. This will save all the water in the tank, and you can use it later.
But there may arise a problem. If you drink an additional amount of water, then a small tank may not suffice to hold the wasted water.
In such circumstances, you can extend the pipeline and connect it with a larger tank. Thus, you can reserve an extra amount of water and you do not even have to bother about the overflow of the water as well.
But remember that if the TDS level is too high in the wastewater, then you may not be able to reuse it.
It may harm the applicables, therefore always check the TDS level of the wastewater before reusing them.
If you want to know how to do this, check the “TDS level in drinking water” article.
Now let us discuss the easy ways to reuse the wastewater.
When it comes to reusing water, what can be a better option than watering plants? If you live in an urban area and you have a garden in the balcony or terrace, then you can make your plants happy with the waste water.
This will be the best alternative in the urban areas because the TDS level in the water remains low in these areas.
Therefore, you do not have to worry about the excessive TDS level.
However, if the water does not suit your plants, they may react in different ways. Therefore, notice carefully and use the water accordingly.
As an additional precaution, we can say that you should not apply a higher TDS level of more than 2100 ppm in your plants.
Mop the floor
Mopping the floor is another thing that requires a lot of water. Therefore you can use the excess water for this purpose as well.
You can mix both the wastewater and regular tap water in equal proportions to leave no stain on the floor.
You can also use this water on alternative days to avoid unnecessary stains. If you see that the water is affecting the shine of your floor, then you should discontinue it.
Washing your car
Another thing that wastes a lot of water is the car washing process. Therefore the wastewater can be also used here.
A TDS level of 1200 – 1500 PPM is easily acceptable if you want to wash your car. Therefore, without bearing the guilt of wasting water, just use it the way you can.
Use in washing your clothes
As we all know that the washing machines consume a considerable amount of water, therefore waste water from RO purifier will be a great use if we utilize the water in the washing machine.
We can save the wastewater in a separate tank, or we can also dunk the water pipe directly into the washing machine.
The machine will take up the water that it needs and after the tank is full, you can transfer the pipe into another bucket.
If you wash your clothes with your hands, then also the water can be used for rinsing your clothes.
However, a high TDS level can harm delicate fabrics; therefore, check whether the TDS level is too high (below 2000).
Clean the utensils
We all are habituated to wash our utensils under running tap water. But it indeed wastes a lot of water.
Therefore, using the discarded water from the RO purifier can save both the tap water and the outworn water.
Hence, you save double the amount of water.
However, do not forget to keep the water in a bucket near your kitchen sink.
Toilet flush and toilet cleaning
If you have extended the wastewater pipe to your bathroom, then you have solved half of the problem because the only way of using the TDS water without any tension or harm is by using it on flushing.
You can also wash the toilet floor with this water. However, if you are worried that it will leave stains behind, then do not bother much.
Because you can easily remove it by using your regular toilet cleaner.
How can we reduce water wastage?
With the old RO purifiers, you do not have any way out. It will waste the amount of water that it is programmed to do.
But the new models that use the Save Water Technology can save much of the water. They can recover up to 50% of purified water.
Therefore, if you can afford it, try to buy these models. They will save much of the water resources.
