Therefore, before buying one inverter, consider this buying guide once. You will get every detail regarding inverters and inverter batteries here.

We will also provide you with the necessary tips to protect your inverter and major factors to consider before buying.

What is an Inverter and its Workings?

An inverter is basically a device working to convert the direct current into alternating current. For the purpose of converting the DC to AC, it is used. Therefore, during longer and frequent power cuts, an inverter is used.

working of inverter

These generally come with batteries which store electricity. The alternating current is capable of running almost all the electrical appliances.

During a power cut, the inverter converts the DC into AC, resuming the  electricity supply. Hence, you can enjoy electricity without any disturbances.

Types of Inverters

There are 3 different types of inverters.

Sine Wave Inverter

The sine wave inverters come with a rotating AC machine to generate power. Though these inverters are the costliest ones, they are best to cater to heavy loads.

In conclusion, almost all the electrical appliances are compatible with this type of inverter- sine wave inverter.

  • Best to cater heavy loads
  • Compatible with all appliances (electrical).

  • Very costly

Modified Sine Wave Inverter

The modified sine wave inverter is another type. Here the waveform is more like a square. This kind of inverter is capable of working with all electrical appliances.

It comes with a demerit, as working with different appliances, reduces the efficiency of the device. Thus, there might be a humming or buzzing sound.

Moreover, you might also see dimmer fluorescent lighting. As compared to the Sine wave inverters, these are more affordable.

  • Compatible with electrical appliances
  • Affordable price

  • Not compatible with all electrical devices
  • Not efficient
  • Makes a buzzing sound

Square Wave Inverter

These inverters are the cheapest of the lot. With low price comes low quality, hence these less efficient as well.

Moreover, all the electrical appliances do not work with these inverter types.

  • Cheaper and affordable

  • Not compatible with all devices ( electrical)
Features Sine Wave Inverter Modified sine wave inverter Square wave inverter
Compatibility Compatible with all electrical appliances Compatible with all electrical appliances Not Compatible with all electrical appliances
Efficiency Very Efficient Not Efficient Not much Efficient
Sound No sound Buzzing sound No Sound
Price Costly Affordable Cheaper

How to Understand the VA Rating of an Inverter for Home Use?

Before buying an inverter, you need to understand The VA rating of an Inverter.

Most of the time, the power factor of the inverters range between 0.7 to 0.8. It means an inverter with 100 watts can supply power of 70-80 watts.

Therefore, on the basis of the thumb rule, you need to divide the required load (total) in watt by the power factor. The result is the VA rating of the inverters.

For example, you might run two fans of 60W, two tube lights of 60Watt and a TV of 60Watt. Now, just add them, and get the total number of power you need in watt. In this case it will be (60×2)+(60×2)+60 = 300 Watt.

Therefore, you just need to run 300 Watt of power. Now to calculate the VA, you have to divide this by the power factor of the inverters. As mentioned earlier, the inverter ranges from 0.7 to 0.8. So, let us take 0.75 as an average.

300/0.75= 400VA

Therefore, this 400 is the VA. This is going to be the maximum load for the inverter. But, you are not going to get an inverter with this exact VA value.

In such a case, go for the nearest high round figure.

Note, that you should always calculate the exact requirements. It is recommended to select the higher values. Then you have an inverter with a high capacity. Initially, it might cost you more, eventually, you will enjoy a longer backup.

Difference between an Inverter and a UPS

On the basis of the functions, an inverter and a UPS are the same but there is a slight difference.

When you experience a power cut, there is a need to switch over from the mainline to the battery power.

Difference Between an Inverter and UPS

The difference lies here. The inverter takes 100 milliseconds to switch over, whereas the UPS takes 3-5 milliseconds. Therefore using a UPS system, you just get an uninterrupted power supply.

In the case of laptops or PCs, these switch off even when there is an absence of a power supply just for a few milliseconds. In such a case, using a UPS is a better option.

Moreover, there are two types of UPS. One is online-UPS and the other is an offline UPS. they have a slight difference.

The online one continuously supplies power from the battery. It supplies power even when the mainline is on and recharges the battery simultaneously. As a result, you do not experience a loss of power.

The offline one, on the other hand, uses battery power when there is a power cut.

Features Online-Ups Offline-Ups
Power Supply Continuously supplies power from the battery Uses the battery power only during a power cut
Power Loss No power loss during a power cut Uses the battery power only during a power cut

Different Types of Inverter Batteries

There are different inverter batteries. Often it happens you buy a mismatched battery mistakenly which renders your inverter completely useless.

Based on the internal working, these inverter batteries are of three types- Flat plate, Tubular, Sealed ( no maintenance ) battery.

Flat Plate Batteries

The flat plate batteries are the first generation ones. However, these batteries are not ideal for places experiencing frequent power supply cuts.

Flat plate batteries

These batteries are a combination of the positive-negative plates. They are lightweight but are uneconomical.

There is a demerit. as these require a lot of maintenance. It has to be replenished by distilled water ( free of minerals) with an interval ranging from three to six months.

These batteries do not permit a longer life span. They are not eco-friendly as well. Moreover, during the time of charging it emits harmful gases.

Make sure that you are not placing this battery near any flammable stuff. Furthermore, the battery even takes a longer time to charge itself.

  • These batteries are not heavy.

  • Requires a lot of maintenance.
  • Not environment friendly.
  • Takes a longer time to charge.

Tubular Batteries

The next version of the earlier one is the Tubular batteries. The lead-acid factor is the same here. Yet it comes with some add-on advancement regarding features, constructions etcetera.

Tabular Batteries

These batteries are the best for places facing frequent power cuts. Furthermore, they offer a  much longer lifespan which can be up to five years. These are bound with the cycles of deep charging, with an efficient performance. The advantage is that it requires very low maintenance.

These batteries offer high prices. Yet, in the long run, you will be benefited from their features and long lifespan.

The secret to its quality performance is due to the positive plates. These are replaced with the use of parallel polyester tubes with lead oxide in it. Hence, these batteries are named so-the tubular batteries.

These batteries are the best compared to the flat-type batteries.

  • Ideal for frequent power cuts
  • Comes with a longer life span
  • Requires low maintenance

  • The price is on the higher side.
  • Not environment friendly.

Sealed Lead ( Zero maintenance)

The sealed lead batteries have different names. For example, deep cycle SMFbatteries or VRLA batteries. From the name only, you can understand that these batteries need no maintenance.

The zero or no maintenance is because of a special kind of electrolyte that needs no replenishment. It is always made sure that the battery has a good amount of electrolyte.

A good amount of electrolyte always undergoes various chemical reactions for a specific period of time.

Also, these are eco-friendly as they do not emit harmful gases. Though there is a demerit that they do not offer a longer life span compared to the tubular ones. These are expensive as well.

  • No maintenance.
  • They do not emit harmful gases.

  • Does not come with a longer lifespan.
  • The price is on the higher side.

How to Choose the Right Battery?

The compatibility of the battery with the inverter is very important. It is one of the most important factors you should consider before buying an inverter. Therefore, buy such a battery that is totally compatible with the inverter.

You cannot buy any random battery without having an in-depth knowledge of your inverter.

Before buying a battery for your inverter,  you need to consider the type of your inverter. There are many types of batteries as well that are compatible with all the inverters.

Therefore, you can buy them as well.

Here is a chart of inverter-battery compatibility. Have a look and choose accordingly.

Required Power The back-up time Recommended Inverter Capacity Recommended Battery’s size
300 Watt 3 Hours 1200VA 100Ah
400 Watt 3 Hours 1500VA 150Ah
600 Watt 3 Hours 2500VA 200Ah
700 Watt 4 Hours 3500VA 300Ah
800 Watt 5 Hours 5000VA 400Ah

Moreover, the size of the battery should also be considered.

You might end up buying a good battery spending a good deal of money. Later on, you might find that the size of the battery does not match your requirement.

Now, you might be stuck with the question as to how to choose it? Therefore, in such a case look for the Ah in batteries. They refer to the amount of energy a battery is able to store.

Use the formula to calculate the size.  For example, you might want to have a backup for 8 hours with an inverter of 300VA.

Note: If you do not understand what the VA is, refer to the point on how to understand the VA rating of an Inverter?

Therefore the total VAh required will be 8×300= 2400 VAh.

A regular battery offers 12 voltage of input.

Therefore, to get the required Ah value, divide VAh by Voltage (VAh / V):

                  2400/12= 200 Ah.

Whenever you go to buy a battery just look for the Ah value. In the market, you will get batteries with capacities of 100 Ah, 150Ah, 200Ah, 300Ah, 400Ah.

Always choose the nearest highest.

How to Manage the Bigger Appliances?

While buying an inverter for home, you must be thinking about how to manage bigger appliances like ACs or refrigerators.

How to manage bigger appliances

The refrigerator, on average, consumes 300-350 Watts. The compressors of conventional refrigerators do not work continuously. It is because they stop and start depending on cooling requirements.

An ideal inverter for a refrigerator would be 2.5KVA. The refrigerator consumes an overall of 2 units of electricity per day. Therefore, an inverter of high capacity with a smaller battery will be sufficient to power your refrigerator.

The AC units, on the other hand, are similar to this. The compressor here switches between the start and stop as well.

You need a 3.5KVA inverter with higher Ah value batteries or multiple batteries to run your AC. It is because an AC unit consumes more power than a refrigerator.

It is because of such a hassle of high power, users tend to not connect their AC and refrigerator to the inverter.

Factors to Consider before Buying an Inverter for Home

Now that you have an idea about an inverter, you might decide to buy one. Yet, before buying note that there are certain factors which you need to consider.

Here are some of the important factors. Read them and follow them accordingly.

Wiring of the House

It is very important to check the wiring of your house first. Consult an electrician to know whether your house wiring has a facility back up for it or not.

Wiring of the house

Generally, people do not consider refrigerators and ACs. Therefore, ask your electrician to arrange for the necessary isolation of these appliances when you buy an inverter.

Requirement for The Bypass Switch

There is a possibility that your inverter might face some issues like power overload or blown fuse. This therefore affects the functioning of your inverter. In such a case, a bypass switch is useful.

With the use of the bypass switch, it bypasses the normal functioning of your inverter using power from the main electric grid. As the power does not pass through the inverter, therefore you get some time to solve the problem.

Battery-Inverter Compatibility

The battery and inverter compatibility is a must else your inverter is of no use. Check your inverter and buy batteries that are compatible.

If you fail to acknowledge your inverter properly then you can buy batteries that are compatible with all types of inverters.

You can refer to the section How to Choose the Right Battery? In this article. It will surely benefit you.

Earthing and Other Necessary Precautions

Earthing is another important factor to consider when buying an inverter. This will save you from dangerous accidents like short-circuit, electrocution.

Note, that you do not touch the inverter or the battery with wet hands. Moreover, do not allow kids around the inverter.

Clean the inverter and battery from dust as well. Do not forget to replenish the water supply (distilled). It is better to keep a calendar to note the refilling details.

The Provision of Inverter Trolley

It is very important to place the inverter in the right place. The combination of the inverter and the battery makes a very heavy appliance.

Therefore, buy a trolley. It will accommodate both the inverter and the battery.

Try to place the inverter near the main power supply. Hence, there will be no unnecessary wires hanging.

Cost and Quality of the Inverter

Always consider the cost but quality first. With higher price comes higher quality. Therefore, if you are buying an inverter, quality should matter more. It might cost you now, but in the long run, you will be benefitted.

As we know inverters are not something that you will buy often. Thus, spending on the right product will yield in the long run.

Try to buy high quality inverters obviously considering your budget.

Brand and Warranty

The brand is very important when you consider buying anything. So is the case with inverters. With reputed brands comes a big warranty deal. So clearly always choose inverters that offer a longer warranty.

A good warranty comes with a high price but quality first. An inverter is a long term investment, therefore, choose accordingly.

Tips to Protect your Inverter and Batteries

Here are some tips to protect your inverter and batteries.

  • Try not to connect heavy loads to the inverter for home use. Therefore, it is better not to connect refrigerators, ACs, washing machines, geysers etc.
  • To use the mixer grinder, disconnect all the other appliances.
