We will cover features, pros & cons in-depth for each air conditioner and a comprehensive buying guide to make an informed buying decision.
Moreover you will have a complete idea which AC to get for yourself. Whether 1 Ton AC or 1.5 Ton AC, Window AC or Inverter AC.
But before that we want to share some quick tips with you that would help you to choose the right air conditioner for you.
Key Factors To Consider Before Buying an Air Conditioner
-
Capacity: The first and foremost thing that you need to notice in your AC is its capacity. The capacity is measured in tonnage.
Capacity depends on the size of your room, the number of members in the room, the usual temperature of the place where you reside and the position of your room. Concentrate on all these matters before choosing the tonnage. -
Star Rating: The electricity consumption of an AC stands as the most concerned matter for all. But there is a way to get rid of this anxiety which is the energy star rating. More stars mean more energy efficiency.
So, always choose a star rated product while buying your AC. -
Inverter Technology: Inverter technology is another effective way of saving power. A star rated inverter AC is way more efficient than a non-inverter star rated AC.
So, this is another noticeable feature while buying the best AC in india. -
Condenser Coil Material: There are two commonly found condenser coil types. One is the copper coil and the other is the aluminum coil. Both of them are good for heat exchanging but the copper coils need comparatively low maintenance and they are long lasting.
So, try to get a product with the copper condenser coil.
How Do We Choose and Rank Air Conditioners?
- Features: There are some must-have features in every AC. Our products are selected carefully keeping these features in mind. We also discuss whether these features will be helpful for you or not.
- Cost: Cost is a genuine concern for most of us. So, we try to add those products that have easy maintenance and affordable servicing costs. We also try to add products that save on your electricity bills.

-
Brands service quality: So that you do not get any difficulty after the purchase, we try to verify the after sales services of the brands.
Therefore, all the products that have been listed here are thoroughly checked. So, read the entire list and decide which one is your favorite.
There are many other points to notice in an AC, such as, filtration process, cooling ability, special features and so on. To give thorough knowledge about that we will have a detailed discussion later on.

You will never get rid of the temperature when you are in India. In such circumstances, when you are to find the best air conditioner, LG has a variety of products to offer you.
Among them, we have chosen this product to keep it at the top of our best AC in India list.
The first thing that led us to do so is its dual inverter compressor that saves much energy and gives you silent cooling. Also, it has an Anti-corrosive Ocean Black Protection that gives you exceptional durability to the compressor.
With the 5-in-1 convertible cooling, it makes temperature control easy. So, you can control the cooling power according to your desires.
If you want to give your home the touch of modernity, then LG has the Built-in wifi smart control for you.
This feature lets you control the AC even when you are not at your home. Just install the LG ThinQ app, and you are all set to go.
Though it claims to give you seamless wifi connectivity but I personally faced a hazard while connecting my device with the AC. If you are not a wifi user, then also this feature is of no use.
So, if you think that you can manage without the wifi connectivity feature, then I will advise you to look for other models without smart wifi connectivity. That will be much more cost-effective for you.
The three safety features that LG has included to ensure the product’s durability are the stabilizer-free operation feature, ocean blackfin, and the Hi-grooved copper coils.
The stabilizer-free operation makes it able to handle a voltage fluctuation range of 120V-290V. The ocean blackfin in the AC unit gives it protection against dust, smoke, and other chemicals.
And the copper coils are durable and need less maintenance. Therefore, you get a product that can serve you for longer.
Now we should discuss one of its most useful features, which is the Auto clean technology. The feature is available in high-end products only. It does not allow microorganisms to accumulate in your machine and keep your home bacteria and fungus free.
You can just turn on the Auto clean mode, and the heat exchanger will automatically get dry. As a result, there will be no scope of bacteria buildup.
Additionally, it has an HD filter with antivirus protection. The filter mesh has a coating of cationic silver ions that can trap and kill 99% of viruses and bacteria. So if your pocket allows you to buy this product, you can go with it.
Advantages:
- Stabilizer-free operation gives protection from voltage fluctuation.
- Comes with a smart diagnosis system.
- Auto clean feature included.
- The gas detector informs you about the maintenance.

Other Features: | PM 2.5 & HD Filters. Insta cool feature. Dual filtration system. |
You should stay very cautious about your breathing air when you stay among the polluted cities of India. Therefore, having an AC that can filter the air is a genuine necessity.
Keeping this in mind, Carrier has included Dual Filtration technology in this product.
The AC has PM 2.5 and HD filters both. The PM 2.5 filter deletes the microparticle pollutants, and the HD filter removes the smallest particles from the air.
Consequently, you get double layer protection from minute particles. However, an antibacterial filter is also very important to have in our AC so that you don’t have to deal with consequences caused by bacteria and germs.
So, if you feel the need to have an anti-germ filter in your AC, this product may not be a good option for you.
The Insta Cool feature enhances the cooling capacity of this AC. When the temperature goes higher than usual, you can turn on the mode and relish the fastest cooling.
This feature is also available in other brands with different names. So do not get puzzled with different names as they deliver the same advantage.
Not only the Insta cool mode, but you will get many other modes as well such as auto mode, cool mode, dry mode, cool mode, and sleep mode. These are included to set the temperature depending on your moods.
Carrier gives you the ideal warranty period that the best AC in India should possess. It gives you ten years of coverage in the compressor, 1 year on the product, and 1 year on the condenser.
You may know that the AC condenser coils should always be that of copper, and this AC has the same. Therefore, you get more durability, less tension maintenance, and more heat transfer.
The features we have discovered in this AC are good and effective. But it would have been better if it had the stabilizer-free operation option too.
With this product, you have to buy a separate stabilizer to keep your product safe. So if you are ready for that, you can go with it.
Advantages:
- The copper condenser coil needs less maintenance.
- 1-year product warranty and 10 years on compressor.
- Inverter technology saves energy.
- Suitable for medium-sized rooms.
- Insta cool mode for faster cooling.
Drawbacks:
- Not stabilizer-free.

The dual inverter compressor is double times more energy efficient than the normal inverter compressors. They have a higher rotational frequency that leads them to cool your room faster and produce a silent cooling.
The 4-in-1 convertible cooling allows you to set the power of the AC as per the environmental temperature.
The Himalaya cool technology is another feature that enhances the product’s cooling capacity. Nowadays, many AC brands are including this sort of feature in their products so that their products can produce faster cooling without making you wait for long.
An AC is almost incomplete without filters. This AC is not devoid of that. It has an HD filter with antivirus protection.
However, a dust filter is also needed in your home, especially if you are an asthma patient. So, this is a minus point of this AC.
It has a Low Gas detection feature that alerts you when the refrigerant level in your machine is low. This is a useful feature that you will get only in high-end models.
Another useful feature of this product is the stabilizer-free operation and the smart diagnosis system.
The smart diagnosis system is for solving any AC-related issues without bothering much.
The hi-grooved copper condenser coils with the Ocean black protection and the ocean blackfin make this product exceptionally durable and effective in its duties
There are ample good features in this AC. The energy rating is also good. Consequently, the price is also a bit higher. So, if you think that you need an average product under your budget, then you may get many other options that we will be mentioning later.
Advantages:
- Silent cooling.
- 5-in-1 convertibility gives you desirable cooling.
- Anti-corrosion coating in the compressor.

When you make the best AC brand list, unhesitatingly, Panasonic will be one of them. And here is a specimen from Panasonic that we have picked up for you in our product list.
Panasonic 1.5 Ton 5 Star wifi Twin-Cool Inverter Split Air Conditioner is trending because of its dual compressor and voice control feature.
We have already said in the previous description that the dual inverter compressors are more efficient than that of a normal compressor. Along with that, it comes with a 5-star energy rating, so this product will save much energy and money yours.
The AC is just the right thing to cope up with the modern lifestyle. The Google voice assistance and the AI-enabled Mirage App compatibility make it so.
With Alexa, you can control your AC through voice. And with the app controlling system, you can control the AC with your phone.
However, if you are not fond of such features, you will find no importance in shedding extra expenses over these.
Now let us come to its cooling ability. Panasonic has included the Jetstream airflow technology that can throw air up to 45 feet. Thus, it spreads air throughout the room.
Along with that, it has the 4-way airflow technology. Both the features together give you better results in air circulation.
The nanoe-G technology is a filtration system that removes both dust pollutants and airborne bacteria and viruses. So the filtration process is also better with this product.
The Eco-Tough casing and stabilizer-free operation of this product enhance the durability of it.
So, with this product, you will be getting an AC that saves energy, cools perfectly, and is also long-lasting. But it is a high-end product that may not be affordable for everyone.
The installation is not provided free of cost. And despite the manufacturers amaze you with the One-touch service thing still, the after-sales services are too meager.
Thereby, we have kept this product at the 4rth position.
Advantages:
- Sleep profile customization system.
- Fast and easy service with one touch.
- Auto diagnosis feature detects the issues and alerts the user.
- Can handle voltage fluctuation range of 100V-290V.

For helping you in your exertion of finding the proper AC, we wanted to include products from the best AC brands. So, before ending the list, how can Godrej not get a mention?
So here is a five stars energy-rated AC from Godrej, which is specially designed with a tropical green inverter for superfast and powerful cooling.
The compressor has a wider rotational capacity that gives you superfast cooling consuming very little power. Along with that, it comes with tri-filter air purification.
The tri-filter purification implies 3 different filter installations in the AC., and these are the antibacterial filter, anti-dust filter, and active carbon filter.
The antibacterial filter excludes bacteria from the air. The anti-dust filter is to negate the dust particles in the air, and the activated carbon filter captures the dirt and does not let the dust circulate in the air.
So, you are getting a perfect combination of filters that are protective against both dust and harmful viruses and bacteria.
The Golden fin condenser coil is another plus point of this product. But just because it is from Godrej, we could not pin it to a higher position in our list. It lacks many useful features yet comes at a higher price.
And as per my personal experience, the servicing section is not that commendable. So, here also we recommend that if you want to avail maximum features at a reasonable price, you can go with Hi-sense.
Advantages:
- Smart diagnosis feature to detect the problem.
- Anti-corrosive evaporator.
- Three layers of filters for better air purification.
- Tropical green inverter.
- Silent operation.
Drawbacks:
- Not stabilizer free.

Its air purification system includes only a PM 2.5 filter, but it could have been better to have an antibacterial filter too.
The Superdry mode can be a lifesaver in the monsoon seasons as it paralyzes the humidity of your room. Hence, no dampness in the room in cloudy weather.
It’s high ambient cooling at 52 degrees is another great thing in the broiling heat. The features are good, and if you are satisfied with the price, then you can think about this product.
Advantages:
- Stabilizer free.
- Low maintenance.
- Eco-friendly refrigerant gas.
- Multi-stage filtration of the air.
- Dehumidifier added.
Drawbacks:
- Only three energy stars.

Presently, you can see there are a lot of air conditioner brands available in the market.
So, naturally, people have become more confused while purchasing the best AC.
Still, you have to consider several features of an Air Conditioner before investing your hard-earned money into it.
Here, in this article, we will provide you a complete AC buying guide that will be helpful for you while purchasing the best air conditioner for your home.
Before going further to the buying guide the basic thing you have to know is what an AC and how it works.
What is an Air Conditioner (AC)?
An air conditioner is a machine or system that treats air in a particular, usually surrounded area through a refrigeration cycle. In this way, the warm air is replaced and removed with the cooler air.
As per the construction, the entire system of heating, ventilation and air conditioning is known as HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning).
So, before choosing the best AC in India, consider the type of Air Conditioner that you want to buy as per your convenience.
Types of Air Conditioners
There are mainly 3 types of ACs that you can see in the market, Split AC, Window AC and Portable AC.
Split Air Conditioner
As the name shows, this type of air conditioner comes with two units.
You need to install one unit mounted outside of the room on the wall and the other unit will be mounted inside the room.
In the outside unit, you can see a compressor and a condenser. The inside unit consists of a blower.
The compressor gets connected to the blower with a connecting pipe. The compressor draws air from outside and makes itself cool.
Then the air is passed to the blower and the blower throws the cold air into the room. In comparison with other air conditioners, split AC is more aesthetically pleasing.
These AC units are suitable for large bedrooms and large areas like commercial places.
Window Air Conditioner
Window AC comes with only one unit that has a combination of compressor and blower within it. This AC needs to be installed only in the window frames.
The blower present in the unit faces the inside walls of the room. And the other side faces the outside open air.

Portable Air Conditioner
In India, portable AC is very new. These air conditioners look like air coolers.
You can move this AC from one room to another room.
For portability, these AC units are known as Portable AC. This type of AC is suitable for those homes, particularly where you can’t mount a window AC or a split AC.
Moreover, people who live on rent can easily use this portable AC and can frequently relocate it from one place to another place.
Working Process of an Air Conditioner
Working of an air conditioner is similar to a refrigerator, but with a larger extent. This machine removes the heat from the inside of a room. Thus the room gets cooler gradually.
Here come the biggest myths that the air conditioners generate cooling. But it’s wrong it don’t produce cooling.
Rather this machine eliminates the heat and makes the room cool gradually.
Through this entire procedure, it will help you get cozy and feel chilled in the scorching summer.
It is very essential to know the scientific functioning procedure of an AC.
Mainly, ACs function on the three rules. These three rules include evaporation, condensation, and compression.
- Every AC unit comes with refrigerant gas. The compression of the refrigerant gas is the very basic step in the working of the air conditioner. When the gas becomes compressed, it turns into a high pressure hot liquid.
- Then the hot liquid flows through the condenser coils where the heat exemptions while cooling the liquid. Here also the liquid remains still under high pressure.
- Then the expansion valve comes into action and transforms the high-pressure liquid into low-pressure liquid.
-
Now the low-pressure liquid flows through the evaporator coils. This is how the machine absorbs the heat from the room.
Here once again, this heat transforms the liquid into gas. As the procedure of gas absorption gets to continue, you will feel cooling in the room ambiance. - At the last step, the refrigerant gas comes back into its original form. This procedure continuously keeps on repeating.
Factors To Consider Before Purchasing The Best Air Conditioner
Now, before purchasing the best air conditioner, you should consider the followings:
Size of Air Conditioner (AC) – Tonnage
Before buying the exact tonnage AC first you need to know what is tonnage.
When we talk about an AC size or tonnage we are actually talking about the amount of heat it removes per hour and not the weight of an AC.
What is Tonnage of an Air Conditioner?
Ton is considered as the cooling capacity of an AC. Tonnage is the amount of heat that the AC removes from the room within one hour.
The mathematical unit of tonnage is measured by BTU. BTU stands for the British Thermal Units. It is the amount of heat required to raise 1 pound of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit.
The measurement is done as 3,412 BTU = 1Kw/hr.
For example, you can see 1 ton is equal to 12000 BTU/hour and a 2-ton AC unit would be rated at 24,000 BTU/hr.
The higher tonnage AC will provide more cooling effect.
In the market, when you browse through the AC units, you will see air conditioners of various tonnages. Several available AC tonnages are 0.75-ton, 1-ton, 1.5-ton, 2-ton, and many more.
How To Choose the Right Tonnage of an Air Conditioner?
Now, the question is that what is the right size of AC for your room. Frankly speaking there is no specific answer to this question.
Because the decision depends on several factors like room size, number of people in room, number of appliances in room, etc.
-
Size of the room: You have to keep in mind the volume and area of the room where you will install the AC. The primary job of an AC is to remove the heat from the room by making it cool.
So, higher the tonnage, more the amount of heat the AC removes from the room within one hour.
For example, an AC unit of 1.5-ton will work differently in a room of 120 square feet than in a room of 150 square feet. It happens due to the higher volume of the hot air. -
City where you live: You have to consider the city where you are living. The climate of that particular city is very important as you may need AC of higher capacities when the outer temperature increases.
You can see that in some extremely hot states like Jaipur, Agra, Delhi, the temperature reaches 45 degree celsius in summer. Or you can see that in some coastal cities like Banglore, Chennai, or Mumbai the temperature hovers around 38 degree celsius to 40 degree celsius.
So, to tackle such a climate, you may need to choose the high tonnage air conditioners. -
Location: Consider the exact location of the room where you will install the AC. It is essential as the rooms can appear hotter if the ceiling of your room gets direct sunlight during the daytime.
Hence you need higher capacity of AC to get proper cooling.
It works the same to the side walls as well. -
Number of people in the room: If a family contains many people, the heat emission will be higher from the bodies. Therefore, you may need an AC unit of higher tonnage to cool the rooms where many people live.
For instance, you can see that an AC unit of 1.5 ton will work better in a room of 150 square feet.
On the other hand, this same sized room will need an AC unit of 2-ton if 10 or 15 people are staying such as in a shop or in a restaurant room.
The following table will help you choose the right size of AC according to the room size.
Size of the Room | Recommended AC Size |
0 to 80 square feet | 0.75 Ton |
80 to 120 square feet | 1 Ton |
120 to 180 square feet | 1.5 Ton |
180 to 300 square feet | 2 Ton |
Concept of Inverter AC
Inverter AC is a type of air conditioner that works on inverter technology and saves a lot of power.
In a regular AC, you can see the full capacity of the compressor when the AC is functioning.
When the temperature reaches the optimum stage, the compressor switches off, and the fan of the AC continues to operate.
After the temperature rises above the threshold limit, the compressor starts to work again and works with full capacity.
Here, you should keep in mind that the compressor only works on full and zero.
Inverter ACs do not work in the same procedure. Here, the compressors function with multiple speeds.
In these ACs, the compressor never switches off, and it always remains on.
As the compressors run at various speeds, hence it draws less power. The Inverter ACs mostly functions like the accelerator of a car.
In a car, when we want to increase the speed, we have to press on the accelerator. And when you want to slow down the speed, you have to remove your foot from the accelerator.
Just in this same way, the inverter AC works, and you also will get the power-saving feature only in the split AC models.
Now comes the benefits, the only benefit of using the Inverter AC is that these are highly energy efficient.
You may compare a 3-star Inverter AC with the 5-star typical split AC.

Inverter AC vs Non Inverter AC
- The basic difference between these two types of AC is that the inverter AC can run at various speeds and variable tonnage. On the other hand, non-inverter AC units run at a constant tonnage and speed.
- Inverter AC can adjust their speed and tonnage according to the heat of the room. On the other hand, non-inverter AC units don’t have this capacity.
- As per efficiency, inverter AC units are more efficient than the non-inverter ACs.
The size of the room and number of people there also have an impact here. Hence, you have to choose the perfect AC unit according to all these aspects.
Now, we will provide a basic chart to differentiate between an Inverter AC vs Non-Inverter AC.
Aspects | Inverter AC | Non-Inverter AC |
Compressor motor | Always on | On and Off |
Electricity consumption | Less | More |
Appliance life | High | Moderate |
Price | Highly expensive | Expensive |
Reach to desired temperature | Quickly | Takes time |
Here, we will provide the BEE data of 2018 about the power consumption of several AC units with various ratings and tonnage.
This table shows that the higher star rating AC units with lower consumption.
Here, you also can see that the inverter AC units are extremely energy efficient.
No. of Stars | 0.75 Ton | 1 Ton | 1.5 Ton | 2 Ton |
1 Star Non Inverter | 627 | 843 | 1246 | 1648 |
2 Star Non Inverter | 596 | 800 | 1184 | 1626 |
3 Star Inverter & Non-Inverter | 542 | 747 | 1104 | 1448 |
4 Star Inverter | 464 | 645 | 945 | 1293 |
5 Star Inverter | 450 | 554 | 840 | 1113 |
Type of Air Conditioner Compressor
Compressor is one of the most vital aspect of an AC. You may consider the compressor as the heart of the AC unit.
Therefore, it is essential to know the functioning process of the compressor. Now we will see the role of the compressor in an AC.
The main job of the compressor of an AC is to compress the refrigerant gas to high pressure. It also converts the refrigerant gas into a high-pressure liquid at high temperatures.
This condenser coil passes through the liquid that takes out the heat from the liquid and then releases it in the surroundings.
Then the expansion valve reduces the pressure and converts the liquid into gas.
This gas passes through the evaporator coils. Then the evaporator coils absorb the heat from the room and make the rooms cool.
There are two types of compressors namely Reciprocating Compressors and the Rotary Compressors. Below is the difference between Reciprocating vs Rotary Compressor.
Reciprocating vs Rotary Compressors in AC
Reciprocating Compressor
This type of compressor is similar to the engine of the automobile. This compressor works on the concept of the cylinder and piston.
The piston works in back and forth motion, and it results in compression and release of the gas.
Pros-
- Reciprocating compressors are easy to maintain.
- These compressors are capable of working at higher pressures.
Cons-
- These compressors produce a lot of noise.
- With these compressors, the air comes out at a high temperature.
Rotary Compressor
This type of compressor consists of several rotors that have very little clearance between them. The rotors of these compressors rotate in opposite directions.
And the air passes through the rotors and emanates at high pressure.
Pros-
- The AC units with this type of compressors are suitable for large industries and offices.
- These compressors make less noise.
- With Rotary compressor, the air comes out at a lower temperature.
Cons-
- This type of compressor is more expensive than Reciprocating compressors.
- In these compressors, higher usage is needed for maximum working.
You should consider the pros and cons of both of these compressors for your ac.
Also, remember that the Reciprocating Compressors are suitable for small offices and homes, whereas Rotary Compressors are suitable for big industries and offices.
Condenser Coil Material of the AC
AC units work is based on condensation, compression, and evaporation. The entire procedure involves moving the refrigerant gas inside the coils.
These coils are mainly made of two materials, copper and aluminium.
Here, many people get concerned about which coil is better than the copper one or the aluminum coils. In previous times, the coils were mainly made of copper.
Then in 1970, General Electronics made the drastic change when they substituted copper coils with the aluminum coils. Since that particular year, the debate started between the copper coil vs aluminum coil.
Copper Coil vs Aluminium Coil
Here, we will focus on several aspects of choosing the proper type of coils.
Heat Transfer: We all know that copper has higher efficiency of heat transfer than aluminum. Therefore copper coils are considered as a better heat exchanger than the aluminum coils.
Malleability: Aluminium is considered as more malleable than copper. Therefore, aluminum can be molded into any desired shape than copper.
Consequently, you can go for aluminum coils to make the best AC.
Strength: While considering the strength factor, copper is always stronger than aluminum. Even copper coils also last longer than aluminum coils.
Cost Factor: While purchasing any electronic device, the cost factor is a considerable aspect to consider. Copper is more expensive than Aluminium.
Therefore you can go for the AC units with aluminum coils to save your money.
Corrosion: AC units work in a damp environment. There is always a possibility of corrosion.
This corrosion causes the formation of a layer over the coils and also affects the conductivity.
People who live near the sea should be highly cautious about this matter.
Maintenance: You can see that the condenser coils are always placed on the external AC units. They have to face extreme weather conditions.
Copper coils are easier to maintain, whereas you have to keep the aluminum coils into heavy-duty cabinets. Therefore, they are difficult to maintain.
Microchannel Condenser Coils: Microchannel Condenser coils are also aluminum coils. These coils are flat aluminum tubes that come with minute holes through which the refrigerant flows.
The entire set up is made up of aluminum.
So, there is no chance of galvanic corrosion. Therefore, these coils are appropriate for ACs that work in coastal regions.
Samsung AC manufacturers use this technology that is called Multi Jet technology.
Blue Fin Condenser Technology: When it’s about corrosion, you should know that there are some technologies available available in the market which work to reduce corrosion.
Blue Fin Condenser is such a technology. This technology paints coils with anti-corrosive materials. Hence, it increases the overall life of the AC units.
You have to consider these technologies to avoid corrosion.
Nature of Coolant Used In The Air Conditioner
Coolant is also known as air conditioning refrigerant. It is a vital part of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
The primary function of the air conditioning refrigerant is to absorb the heat from the room.
It also delivers the heat outside. Once the temperature of the room gets eliminated, the room becomes cold.
The coolant remains in the form of gas that is compressed through the compressor at high pressure. Then it converts the gas into a liquid.
At extreme pressures, the liquid reaches a very high temperature.
This liquid passes through the condenser coils, where the temperature of the liquid comes down, and the pressure remains high.
By releasing the high-pressure cold liquid, the AC units reduce the pressure.
Then the liquid travels through the evaporator coils. The heat gets absorbed by the cold liquid and eliminates the heat and makes the room cold.
The fans present in the AC unit also help to sustain the temperature. After absorbing the heat, the liquid evaporates and changes itself into a gas again.
The same procedure gets repeated continuously. This is how the AC unit functions.
Hence, naturally, air conditioning refrigerant is a vital aspect to consider.
Refrigerant | Global Warming Potential | Ozone Depletion Potential |
R 22 | 1810 | Medium |
R 410A | 2088 | Nil |
R 32 | 675 | Nil |
R 134A | 1430 | Nil |
R 290 | 3 | Nil |
R 600A | 3 | Nil |
Types of Refrigerants
After knowing what a refrigerant is, now we will go to the types of refrigerants.
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC): Chlorofluorocarbons was the initial one that was used in AC units all over the world. These refrigerants are also known as R12 refrigerants.
Though these refrigerants were very effective, they played a massive role in the depletion of the ozone layer in the atmosphere.
Now, these types of refrigerants are not used in AC units.
Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC): For environmental concerns CFC refrigerants were replaced with the Hydrochlorofluorocarbons or HCFCs. This type of refrigerant is known as R22.
It is the most common type of coolant used in AC units in India.
Though this coolant is also not so eco-friendly. Therefore, there you can see indications that these refrigerants will be phased out over the next 4-5 years.
Hence, you have to be careful when you buy air conditioners with this coolant.
Hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) In comparison with the R22 coolant, the HFC refrigerants do not deplete the ozone layer much. Therefore these refrigerants are much eco-friendly.
Presently, there are three types of HFCs used that include R410A, R32, and R134.
Hydrocarbons (HC) These types of coolants are the most environmentally friendly. These AC coolants are known as R290 and R600A.
These refrigerants have zero effect on the ozone layer.
They have high energy efficiency and are also the greenest refrigerants available in the market today.
Moreover, we all have a fundamental responsibility to our environment.
Hence, choosing the AC coolant rightly can play a big part in this regard.
Types of Filters Used in an Air Conditioner
Here we are discussing the filters that are used in the AC. if you feel that the AC air is not pure enough then have a look on these filters.
Anti VOC Filter
VOC or volatile organic compounds can be really harmful for our health. It can cause headache, nausea and many other severe diseases that you would never like to deal with. It harms asthma patients as well.
The anti-VOC filters trap and banish these disturbing smells.
Therefore, if you buy an Air Conditioner that has the VOC filter you can get rid of intolerable VOC.
Activated Carbon Filter
If you think that you do not have any harmful gas or chemicals around you then you are wrong. Your home and surrounding is full of dust particles, bad odors, chemicals, smokes and many more.
The activated carbon filters come with tiny pores in them which facilitate trapping of the pollutants. They help other filters to work efficiently.
They cannot work alone in your AC. Therefore, they always come with other filters to complement their duty.
Electrostatic Filter
Electrostatic filters use electrostatic energy to attract dust and debris. The dust particles remain in the filter until you clean them.
As a result you not only get fresh air but it also keeps the AC interior clean. These filters are long lasting, cost-effective and easy to clean at the same time.
Altogether they serve efficiently.
Photocatalytic Filter
Photocatalytic filters work with titanium oxide. When the ultraviolet rays fall on the titanium oxide they release electrons.
These electrons work with the water molecules in the air and create the hydroxyl radicals. The hydroxyl radials are the main element that traps the pollution causing particles.
With this method the AC can nullify the entrance of mold bacteria, virus, pollen, dust and all to your home.
Antibacterial Filter
You may have guessed its capacity and you are right. The antibacterial filters destroy bacteria from air. It destroys dust mites and allergy causing particles as well.
However, this filter is not enough alone. It comes with the HEPA filter or any other filter and commends their performance.
Catechin Filter
Catechin is an antioxidant property extracted from green tea. And the catechin filters are highly effective in killing bacteria and viruses.
They also remove bad odour, smoke and pollution from air. The best part is they are easy to maintain and can last longer if taken care properly.
Vitamin-C Filter
Vitamin C filter is another strong antioxidant that is beneficial for your skin. It is the appropriate thing to give you relief of your stresses after a long day.
It has anti-aging properties and also makes your skin feel softer. So, this filter is an essential one to give your body a relaxed therapy after dealing with pollution for the whole day.
Nano Silver Filter
Silver has always been renowned for its antibacterial capacities and the nano silver filters are just a replica of that.
The nano silver filters have silver’s antibacterial properties that can destroy 650 types of bacteria.
Hence, the nano silver filters act as an essential element in the AC.
HEPA Filter
The High-Efficiency Particulate Air Filter or HEPA filters can eliminate radioactive particles from the air. Therefore, they are good for curing respiratory diseases.
If you have dust allergies or any other kind of recurrent allergy, then this is the right type of filter for your home.
This filter can negate pollen, mold, tiny dust particles, allergens and bacteria as well. The high end filters can soak cigarette smoke and other odours too.
However, the HEPA filters cannot be used in the AC units. The reason is that the HEPA filters are generally made of fiber mats.
Therefore, they can block the airflow of the AC units and lead to evaporator coil freezing and AC unit malfunctions.
However, a blower fan can help in this matter. It will push the air through the filter.
But, as it is difficult to maintain and replace, these are not readily found in the air conditioners. Mostly they are available in air purifiers and vacuum cleaners.
PM 2.5 Filter
PM 2.5 filter works against particulate matters less than 2.5 micrometers. Thereby, they can trap excessively tiny particles that can harm your lungs.
These particles are the effects of smoke, burning of fossil fuels and dust mites. When these particles amalgamate with liquid droplets they become more harmful.
Regular consumption of such motes can easily harm your lungs and bronchi.
So, if you stay in an area where you have factories around or high roads are too nearby, this filter can be rescued.
Pleated Air Filter
Pleated air filters are made of pleats. They have a large surface area, therefore, they can trap more dust particles. They trap odour as well.
These filters are easy to maintain and also lower in price.
Electricity Consumption of the Air Conditioner
We all usually get concerned about electricity consumption when we purchase any electric device.
A common question comes to mind is how much electricity it will consume.
The electricity consumption of air conditioner also depends on several factors like star rating, tonnage, usage of the AC, and many other aspects.
Modes of Operation of the Air Conditioner (AC)
You can use the AC in various modes such as cool mode, fan mode, dry mode, and many more.
Here, we will discuss the modes of the operation of the AC as the electricity consumption depends on it as well.
Cool Mode
Cool mode is the default mode that you will see in every AC. This mode depends on the temperature and the setting of the fan speed.
To activate this mode, you have to set the temperature of your AC between 24 to 26 degrees centigrade.
This range is considered as the most comfortable temperature range to assure maximum efficiency.
Turbo or Quick Cool Mode
Quick-cool mode is not an electricity-saving mode at all. You can see this feature in many AC units. With this mode, the AC starts functioning at a temperature setting of 16 to 18 degrees centigrade.
Dry Mode
Dry mode is the perfect mode that you should use in a humid weather condition. Like if you live in a place near a sea, you can use this mode.
The dry mode of the AC removes the humidity from the air and makes the room cool automatically. During this mode, the fan of the AC runs at lower speeds, and the compressor runs for a shorter period in more extensive cycles.
The main objective of the dry mode is to make the room cool by removing the humidity.
Fan Mode
In the fan mode, the compressor of the AC remains off.
So that it can save energy by this procedure, but it does not make the room cool. Even a ceiling fan will do a better job than the fan mode of the AC.
Sleep Mode
It is a specialized mode that helps the AC to increase the temperature of the thermostat by 1 degree every hour.
It keeps growing until the temperature enhances by 2 degrees.
At night the outer side becomes already cooler; hence this mode ensures less electricity consumption.
Power Saving Mode
In this particular mode, the compressor of the AC shuts down while the temperature of the air reaches the level set in the thermostat.
During this mode, the fan keeps running to maintain the coolness.
When the temperature reaches extreme at a certain level, the compressor starts to function again.
Here you have to keep in mind that the compressor is the largest consumer of electricity.
As the compressor flutters between the on and off position, during this mode, the AC consumes less electricity.
6th Sense Cooling Mode
You will find the 6th sense cooling mode only in the Whirlpool AC units. In these AC units, the technology adjusts the speed of the fan that depends on the temperature inside the room.
This mode is better than the cool mode.
After considering different modes of the AC, you have to consider some other aspects that will influence the electricity consumption of the air conditioner.
-
Location: Location is a vital part while you are concerned about electricity consumption. In some cities of India like Nagpur or Delhi, it becomes very warm during summer. The climate also remains dry.
On the other hand, in places like Chennai or Mumbai, you will experience high humidity. So, naturally, the AC will work differently in both these circumstances. -
Number of appliances in the room: Electrical appliances emit a lot of heat. Also, don’t make your room congested with a lot of furniture. It also impacts the electrical consumption of the AC.
In the AC room, it is recommended that you keep the shelves and cupboards closed. As walls also absorb heat by insulating the walls will help to reduce electrical consumption. -
Colors in the room: Surprisingly, colors impact a lot on the performance of an air conditioner. We all know darker colors absorb more heat, and these colors will take more time to be cool.
Hence, you should choose a light color for the walls and curtains of the room. - Usage: You should consider the daily usage of the AC unit. Also, consider the duration of the utilization of your air conditioner throughout the months of the entire year.
Energy Efficiency (EER, SEER, ISEER, CoP, BEE Star Ratings) of the AC
EER, ISEER, CoP, and Star ratings are such important factors that affect the efficiency of AC units. Therefore energy efficiency is also a vital aspect to consider.
EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio)
EER is a very vital ratio that differentiates between AC units. Scientifically EER is the amount of heat that is removed per hour, and it is divided by the amount of power consumed.
Therefore, we can say EER is equal to BTU/hr/watt. Remember that the higher EER will offer the better performance of the AC unit.
It happens as the AC will be able to remove more heat per hour per unit of power consumed.
So, you may consider the best AC with higher EER.
SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio)
Internal and external temperature is a vital thing that affects the performance of the AC. If the outside temperature is warmer, the AC will consume more electricity to make the room cool.
In monsoon and winter, the temperature is much less than in summer. So, here you can see that the EER of the AC varies according to the seasons.
ISEER (Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio)
The concept of both SEER and ISEER is same. But here two more factors you have to consider.
CSEC (Cooling Seasonal Energy Consumption): CSEC means the total energy that is consumed by the AC when it remains in the active mode.
CSTL (Cooling Seasonal Total Load): CSTL means the total amount of removed heat by the AC unit while it is active.
Now, ISEER is equal to total amount of heat removed to the total amount of energy consumed, i.e. ISEER = CSEC/CSTL
CoP (Coefficient of Performance)
CoP or Coefficient of Performance is a ratio of useful heating or cooling provided to work required.
To understand the concept of CoP, you have to do some simple mathematical calculations. For this calculation, you should know the relation between KW hr and BTU.
We can say that 1KW hr is equal to 3412 BTU or 1 KW is similar to 3412 BTU/hour.
Therefore, 1 W is equivalent to 3.412 BTU/hr.
The CoP is the amount of heat that is removed by the air conditioner in Watts, and it is divided by the power consumption in Watts.
Therefore, CoP does not have any units. A higher CoP will offer higher efficiency of the AC unit.
Also, remember that EER is equal to 3.412 X CoP.
Star Ratings
When you are planning to buy your ac, you have to look for the star ratings as well. The stars are prescribed by the BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency), Department of Energy Savings Government of India.
Into this formulation procedure, a lot of factors go into it. Here, we will provide charts of star ratings for Window AC and Split AC for 1/12/2016 to 31/12/2017.
Below is the defined range of ISEER for Inverter ACs:
In these tables, you can see the star ratings with the EER. While you purchase an AC unit, you will see this table as it is a mandatory part of AC manufacturers to include the EER on the star rating sticker.
Also, remember that the 5-star AC is always more expensive than a 4-star AC. Moreover, you will save a lot of energy consumption for an extended period.
There are some other aspects too, like CSTL, and CSEC, that impact on the performance of an AC which we have discussed earlier.
Some Other Important Points to Consider
Apart from the above mentioned jargon, there are some other points that you have to understand.
Rated Cooling Capacity
Rated Cooling Capacity is a ton of an AC unit. It equals 12000 BTU per hour.
Maximum cooling capacity
It is also measured in tons. For instance, you can see that a 2-ton AC can remove 24000 BTU of heat per hour from a room. Though the previously discussed aspects also impact the process.
It is recommended that you should not purchase an over sized AC as it will affect the performance of the air conditioner.
Rated Power Input
You will see the rated power input on the star rating label. It is a vital part of AC manufacturers to include this figure.
It is equal to the power consumption in Watts when the AC functions at 100% load. A 1.5-ton AC consumes near around 1500 W/hr.
If you use the AC continuously for 5 hours, the consumption is not 1.5 to 2 times 5. It happens as the compressor switches off and on repeatedly.
Hence, consumption will be less.
Half Power Input
The half power input also works by the above concept. It is the power consumption in Watts when the AC functions at 50% of the load.
Maximum Power Input
It is also a type of power consumption when the AC functions at its maximum tonnage capacity. This figure will be different from the Rated Power Input for the tolerance of + or – 5% permitted by the BEE.
Brand and After Sale Service
The main difference between good reputed brand and a normal brand is the quality of the product and the after sale service.
A top brand means great quality of product with good after sale service.
Therefore, we always recommend that you go with a reputed brand and always check the warranty information before purchasing.
An AC with a maximum warranty period on the compressor as well as on other parts will save you lots of money in future.
In the market, you will get several AC brands such as LG, Carrier, Voltas, Whirlpool, Hitachi, etc.
These are considered as the best AC brands in India.
Budget
Although today ACs are no more a luxury item but they don’t come cheap also. The bigger the tonnage the costlier the AC.
Also most of the branded ACs are bit costly compared to non branded ones. But you will get good quality product with good warranty and after sale service.
Also the inverter ACs are costlier than normal ones. But they will save you lots of money in long run.
Therefore, we recommend that you choose it wisely as you cannot change an AC every year.
Tips To Reduce Energy Consumption of Air Conditioner
- Keep the windows closed.
- Use sleep mode in your AC at night.
- Keep the AC vents clean.
- Service your AC timely.
- Use an anti-bacterial filter.
- Use the Wi-Fi connectivity feature to switch on your AC.
- During monsoon use the AC with dehumidifier feature.
- Use the AC with an auto-clean function feature.
Easy Ways To Reduce Air Conditioner Power Consumption
To reduce the power consumption of your AC, here we are sharing some tips that you can follow.
Keep the Default Temperature
Do you know that the higher you set the AC temperature, the lower it consumes the electricity? So, always keep the temperature to the default setting of 24 degrees.
Cover Up The Outdoor Unit
Keep your AC unit in a shaded area. This will help it not to overheat.
Also, it will stay safe from rain and sun.
Clean The Filters
Clean the filters whenever they get dirty. A dirty filter will struggle to circulate the air, which will lead it to consume more power.
If you keep the filters clean, they will easily circulate the air, and the power consumption will be less.
Maintain It Regularly
Maintenance does not consist of cleaning the filter only. It includes the cleaning of the unit, coils, and exterior parts as well.
To know in detail, you can check the ‘how to clean the air conditioner’ article.
Keep The Heat Emitting Devices Away
The devices that emit heat such as computers, TV, printer, and so on away from the room where you use the AC. it will confuse the thermostat.
The thermostat runs until the room gets cool. But when the heat emitting devices are in your room, the thermostat will continuously sense the heat and run until the room is completely cold.
This results in high power consumption. So keep this point in mind.
Seal The Vents
To keep the air inside the room for longer, you can seal the vents of your room. The cooler you will keep your room, the less the power consumption will be.
Switch Fff The AC When Not In Need
As we already said, sealing will help to keep the air inside your room for longer. So once the cooling is done, switch off the AC.
Turn it on again when needed.
Proper Installation
Make sure you get a proper installation of the AC. the unit must be at an airy place.
A congested area will block air circulation. And the result will not be desirable to you.
Use The Fan
You may think that why fans? Actually, the fan helps to circulate the air.
The AC thermostat is programmed to run until it cools down the room. Therefore, if you turn the fan on, the air will circulate faster.
Common Air Conditioner Problems and Their Solutions
Air conditioners are absolute lifesavers in summers, but when they start troubling, it feels like a burden on the head. And when you do not know what will lead to a fixation, you become more anxious.
Therefore, we are making you aware of some of the common problems of the refrigerator and its solutions. Once you get them properly, you no longer have to worry much.
AC Not Cooling
This is the most common problem on earth regarding AC. There can be several reasons for this. Such as,
Improper AC unit placement, periodic maintenance, dirty air filter, faulty components and so on.
What can you do?
The first step you can take is to clean the filters and cleanable components of the AC.
If still, the problem continues, you can call the experts.
Low Refrigerant Level
When your machine runs out of refrigerant, it may not cool down the room properly. Also, it can accumulate ice on the refrigerant lines, can produce hissing noise and even your evaporator coil may freeze.
If you see any of these signs, you can assume a leakage in your AC that is causing the refrigerant to slip out.
What can you do?
Definitely, you will think that refilling the refrigerant will do the job. But no, if you have leakage, the refrigerant will slip out again.
So as a solution, you can try to detect the leakage, and call the service centre to get a repair.
Thermostat Glitches
When there would be thermostat glitches, you will experience strong cooling or abnormal heating up of the machine.
What can you do?
You can check the thermostat setting. Also, check if the thermostat needs a battery replacement.
The wiring may also be responsible in this case. Therefore, you can call the expert to get a fixation.
Strange Noise
Noises are also one of the common problems of AC. You may hear buzzing sounds, ticking sounds, rattling sound and so on.
What can you do?
Various sounds have varied reasons. So when you are experiencing any of the sounds, make sure you do not delay getting it checked by an expert.
Bad Odour Problem
Foul odour may be a result of mildew or mould buildup. Overheating of electrical parts can be a reason as well.
What can you do?
You can clean or change the filters. Also, you can change the evaporator coil and condenser coil.
Do not use the machine for long hours. This can be a solution too.
AC Coil is Frozen
AC coils can freeze if the filters are dirty, the fans are broken, the thermostat is faulty, or the condensate lines are clogged.
What can you do?
In such circumstances, you can try to melt the frost. To do so, turn off the AC and leave it for some hours. You can use a dryer too.
The AC Fan is Not Working.
This problem can arise when the circuit is broken. Or the belt is broken, or maybe the fan motor is burnt. Even ice buildup in the coils can be a reason too.
What can you do?
In such circumstances, you can call a professional for help.
AC Condenser Not Working Correctly
When you see that the AC is producing uneven room temperature or the condenser is completely shut down, or the AC is not working, you can perceive that the condenser is not working correctly. High electricity bills can also be an effect of bad condensers. So you should take immediate steps.
What can you do?
You can both repair and replace the unit. But if you do not want to face this problem again and again, you should replace it and get a new one.
Best AC in India – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. How many times should the AC get serviced?
It entirely depends on your usage. For example, if you are using the AC for a minimum of 6 to 8 hours, you should get the unit serviced for once in 3-4 months.
Otherwise, if you don’t have a proper idea about your usage, the AC should get serviced twice a year. To get the best service, you can consult with a leading HVAC service company.
A quality service provider can provide proper service, according to the size and situation of your AC unit.
2. Can an AC control humidity in the building?
High humidity or low humidity can cause poor indoor air quality and can result in airborne illness, mold growth, etc. After proper installation, the AC should keep the air at a 40 to 60 per cent humidity level.
Still, it is recommended to choose an AC with special features such as humidity control.
3. How can I save energy while using an AC?
There are several steps that can help you to save energy while using an AC. The steps include;
- Adjust the louvres on your split AC so it can emit the air downwards while heating and upwards while cooling.
- Clean the filter of your AC unit regularly.
- Use ceiling fans to help circulate the cold air properly throughout the room.
- Try to keep a professional maintenance schedule.
- During summer, keep the windows properly shaded to keep the heat out as possible.
4. Why sometimes the AC keeps icing up?
The air conditioning unit keeps icing up for various reasons. If this happens, you have to check the filter first as a dirty air filter can restrict the air from moving across the evaporator coil. Thereby it forms ice.
Ice forming puts high stress on the compressor, metals, and the blower motor. You can consult a reputed HVAC service company to fix this issue.
5. What should I do if the AC leaks water?
It is a common issue for many AC users. If the drainage pipe of the air conditioner gets damaged or clogged with dirt, dust, or mold, the AC unit leaks water.
But there is nothing to worry about. To handle this situation, you should try to clean the drainage pipes on yourself first.
Otherwise, you should consult a reliable HVAC service company so that they can fix this issue.
6. Should I clean the filters regularly?
Yes, it would be best if you clean the filters regularly. If you clean the filters frequently, it will improve the cooling and heating system of your AC unit.
Thereby it will improve the indoor air quality of the AC.
By regular filter cleaning, it will ensure proper airflow, and also it will help to keep your home free from allergens, dust, and germs.
According to the type of the filter, you may also clean it weekly or monthly.
7. How much time can it take to service an AC?
Usually, an AC servicing can take 20 minutes to 45 minutes, depending on the size of the AC unit. Dismantle, installation or gas charging of an air conditioner can take near around 30 to 60 minutes.
The required time of repairing or fixing any issue depends on the problem of the unit.
8. Why my AC shows error codes like E3, E4 etc?
Every AC manufacturer has its own set of error codes. So, when there is a problem with your AC unit, it shows such error codes like E3, E4, etc.
These error codes display particular issues that the user or the technician can use to determine the exact problem with the unit.
If your AC unit shows such error codes, you can go through the operating manual that comes with the unit to understand the issue. Otherwise, you should consult with an HVAC technician.
9. How long does an AC unit last?
Usually, most of the AC units last for approximately 10 to 20 years. When the AC unit starts to get aged, the efficiency begins to decrease as well.
When the efficiency starts to drop, you have to repair it or replace it immediately.
10. Why my AC unit is generating the noise?
The AC unit may generate noise if it is not installed correctly. If your AC unit is continuously making noise, it may damage the internal circuits of the unit.
In this situation, you should immediately contact the AC service provider to fix this issue.

Nice & Very Useful Article…
Very informative article. Any opinion/views on the Godrej NXW 1.5 ton AC? It appears to be the only AC in the market with R290 refrigerant. However I am in two minds as it uses an alloy condenser instead of copper. There are no other options of R290 ACs with a copper condenser.

best ac guide in india | best ac blog in india | ac buying guide in india
Very informative article n I must say u covered almost all the relevant points to consider while buying a AC. My question is I want to buy a split ac 1.5 ton but I’m confused between Inverter or non Inverter as I checked with some ac service vendors (because thy repair and service the unit and know the better insight) all suggested me not to buy Inverter ac due to high cost of spares, problem due to lots of sensor used to cater more features etc etc… But after reading your article it’s clear that Inverter AC have more benefits. Can you help suggest Inverter AC is gud if running hours are more than 6hrs for home use. Also I’m confused which brand offers the best product quality,
warranty on condenser n compressor, after sales service between Mitsubishi, Toshiba, Daikin or LG in east delhi region. Kindly advise.
First of all I am glad that my article has given you some value.
Now to answer your first question I would suggest that you should definitely go for an inverter AC if you are going to use it for about 6hrs daily. It will not only save electricity bill for you & give you some monetary benefits in the long run but also nowadays most of the manufacturers are only making Inverter ACs. So, the price difference will go and spares will be more available.
And when the question is about quality of product then all the above mentioned brands are equally good. But if you talk about warranty and after sale service then there is no one better than LG. They have very good stock of spares and mostly they use their own team to provide service whereas most of the others use third party service providers. So, you may face some issues.
Nice article.
